Life is full of amazing coincidences. It so happened that 40 years ago in 1978, two significant events took place in the world fusion community.
First of them took place at the site of Institute of Atomic Energy named by I.V. Kurchatov, Moscow, Soviet Union (now National Research Centre "Kurchatov Institute", Moscow, Russia) where was introduced to the work of the world's first fusion facility with superconducting winding of the toroidal field based on niobium-titanium conductor cooled by liquid helium - tokamak T-7. The second event took place in Hefei, China where was established Institute of Plasma Physics of Chinese Academy of Sciences (ASIPP).
It could seem what can be surprising between two unrelated events, except that they occurred in one year? Nevertheless, in 1990, 12 years later of these events, academician Boris B. Kadomtsev, Director of the Nuclear Fusion Institute of the NRC "Kurchatov Institute", wrote a letter to academician Huo Yuping, Director of ASIPP, with a proposal to accept tokamak T-7 as a gift to ASIPP from NRC "Kurchatov Institute" and this proposal was gratefully accepted by ASIPP. Within 1991-1994 years, the tokamak T-7, along with all engineering and technological systems has been delivered to ASIPP and with the active support of experts from NRC "Kurchatov Institute" was modernized and assembled. In 1995, ASIPP held the physical start-up of tokamak T-7, renamed in HT-7, executed by Chinese specialists themselves. Since from this time, tokamak HT-7 has become the basis of the dynamic development of fusion research in China. Based on experience received during building of the tokamak HT-7, ASIPP specialists, in cooperation with scientists and engineers from different countries, including our specialists, designed and built the world's first tokamak with a fully superconducting magnetic system – EAST, which made ASIPP the world leader in fusion research of present time.
So that two different events, born in one year, combined into one and led to a new qualitative result. Looking back, we recall most warmly our communication with the Directors of ASIPP – academician Huo Yuping, academician Wan Yuanxi, Professors: Weng Peide, Wan Shaohua, Wu Songtao, Wu Weiyue, Gao Daming and many other professionals. We will keep in our minds and hearts a memorable experience with the great Chinese culture: the Great Wall, and Imperial Palaces, the world's largest area of Tianyang Minh, the Mausoleum of Mao TSE Tung and other wonderful cultural and nature places of China. Th ese memories and impressions we have kept in our hearts on all of our life.
