In 1989 I worked jointly with Prof Wan Yuan to organise the Seventh Workshop on Electron Cyclotron Emission (ECE) and Electron Cyclotron Resonance Heating (ECRH) together with an IAEA Technical Committee Meeting. The meeting was held 9 - 11 May, 1987, hosted by ASIPP, Hefei, under the auspices of the IAEA. It was one of the first, possibly the very first, international workshop on fusion held in China. Professor Wan will be able to confirm this.  About 40 delegates attended, with 30 participants coming from outside China. 50 papers were given and, of course, there were many discussions.  

　　Fortunately, I have some photographs taken of the meeting and I attach some of them. 

　　Photo#1. Some of the International delegates travelled to Hefei by bus from Shanghai. We travelled during the night. It was a difficult journey in those years. This photo shows some of the delegates - Prof Ian Hutchinson (MIT), Toon Verhoeven (FOM Institute), Trevor Edlington (Culham Laboratory), John Lore (General Atomics), and his partner Jan, trying to sleep in the bus. 

　　Photo#2. The participants were given a lavish reception by the Institute and the Governor of the Province came to open the meeting and give a speech at the reception. Unfortunately, I cannot remember her name but maybe you can find out. This photo shows the Governor in the middle with me, Dr Alan Costley (JET), to her left. The man on the right is Dr Guenter Waidmann (KFA-IPP, Juelich). Unfortunately I don't have the names of the other gentlemen.

　　Photo#4. One of many enjoyable banquets! Toon Verhoeven, Louise Laurant (CEA), John Lore and his partner Jan, me, and Chinese colleagues. 

　　Photo#5. After the workshop, Dr Waidmann and I went to the South Western Institute and then for some sightseeing. We finished in Beijing where we met by a young Dr Jiangang Li and colleague who took us to the Great Wall of China.  　　  

　　It was a very memorable trip and to this day I remember it well.
