Joint ITPA Experiment MDC25 on Disruption Forces

The problem of disruption forces is recognised by the ITPA community as a critical priority for ITER. In particular, the uncertainty in the magnitude of the horizontal (or sideways) force acting on the tokamak vacuum vessel during plasma disruptions remains a major concern. Present predictions for the sideways force in ITER vary widely—from 2 MN to 60 MN—with the upper estimate exceeding the design limit of 48 MN. The joint ITPA experiment (JEX) MDC25, involving seven research facilities—AUG, COMPASS, DIII-D, JET, JT-60SA, RFX-mod, and TCV—aims to resolve this uncertainty. This talk presents recent progress and outlines future plans for measuring wall currents and disruption forces in tokamaks.
